In this two-volume work of 1873, novelist Anthony Trollope recounts his two-year journey across Britain's colonies in the Antipodes.... all in all to New South Wales, as they were to the small colony settled in the southern island, which had been created in the first place for the convicts, and then nourished by them. A great fight was made by the mother country to retain the right thus to dispose of her rufiians, and Sir William Denison, who was the governor of the day in Van Diemena#39;s Land, was very eager in his attempt to perpetuate the arrangement, acting no doubt under instructions from the Colonial Office at home.
